Why do smart people usually wear eyeglasses??
Question: Why do smart people usually wear eyeglasses? Is it genetics or is just because they read a lot? Is there any relation to smart people to dumb people and who wears glasses?
Answers: I wear glasses but I am not very smart or intelligent! I am normal!! Though, I read a lot.
There is a strong link between excessive close-up work and the need for glasses... its not guaranteed since there are a lot of highly intelligent people that do tons of close-up works such as reading and their vision is crystal clear!
There is definetly a connection though as more and more people are doing close-up related tasks such as sitting on a computer for 9 hours a day and then reading, rarely looking into the distance... the eyes get pretty habituated in the close-up position and often times myopia results
its not a 100% proven fact, but it is generally believed there is a strong link, and yes that is why people who spend a lot of time in libraries DO often wear glasses...
here is a link from the American Optometric Association that discusses some of the causes of myopia and other then genetics close-up work IS a factor

Nobody in my immediate family wears glasses except for me, I also spend a hell of a lot of time infront of a screen and reading.... connection? very likey :)
because they read a lot
Usually smart people teach themselves and adapt to good studying habits more quickly. They read more books, newspapers, research on the computer and even watch the news. They teach themselves through hours of that style of life, and end up worsening the good eyesight they could have once had. Other times, it's just that people regard those with glasses as smart, and immediately reject them from special cliques and such, making them turn to studies as a distraction. However, those who don't wear glasses are not 'dumb' there are smart people who don't wear glasses. Those without glasses just have healthy eyes.
Consider the other stereotype, that asians are great academics.

A lot of people can't see well, so it's not that only nerds have to get glasses. It's just that most people who aren't nerds get contacts. I think the reason why smart people don't get contacts is that they don't care about looking pretty, they care about test grades.
Interesting question; it does seem that way sometimes, doesn't it?
There are a number of studies that associate myopia (nearsightedness) with higher IQ. But the association didn't apply to people who wear glasses because they are farsighted (hyperopes). Also the IQ differences between myopes and people who didn't need glasses were small, though statistically significant. It is also important to realize that certain ethnic groups, like the Chinese, have a much higher incidence of nearsightedness than European races. There is a theory that doing lots of near focusing (reading) during early development may lead to nearsightedness. Does that mean you were smart to begin with, or did all that reading make you smarter?
Finally, to really confuse the issue, many illnesses and conditions that cause developmental delay and cognitive problems (low IQ) are also associated with poor vision and the need for glasses. So, is that person who just sat next to you with REALLY thick glasses really smart, or do they just have really poor vision?
I work at the library and have noticed that all staff/employees including me wear glasses. Don't know why but I need them for reading and computer work.
