What should I do late at night when I can't fall asleep, but need to desperately.??

Question: I don't want any solutions that involve sleeping pills. This includes Advil PM and Tylenol PM because they make me groggy the next day. I have an active mind so it's hard for it to just relax and become blank. What should I do?!
Answers: Buy a self-hypnosis tape from a bookstore. They offer them on several topics, so pick one you might actually benefit from. After using it for awhile, you will be able to meditate yourself to sleep any night within 10 minutes without using the tape anymore.
Have you just discounted all sleeping pills or are you interested in other sleeping pills that won't make you groggy the next day? Some of the newer sleeping pills knock you out for 8 hours and then you wake up as fresh as normal.

*** In response to Logan Y:
The active ingredient in Benadryl is diphenhydramine, which is what causes the drowsiness. Diphendydramine is present in Tylenol PM and Advil PM in exactly the same doses. So if Tylenol PM makes you too tired then Benadryl will do the same thing. It's exactly the same thing except Benadryl lacks the acetaminophen in the Tylenol (which is only for pain relief)_.
Maybe start a wind down process...like lay down in the bed and watch tv for and hour or two before u go to bed.
You know what?? Try this:
Just concentrate on your breath-taking in and exhaling out with eyes closed.
You will be falling to sleep soon, additionally you will have a sound sleep, and will be fresh the next morning...
Meditaion is the Way to go.
Cheers
This is not a sleeping pill, try taking Benydril. It is for allergies, but a very very common side effect is drowzyness. It usually puts me down 10 minutes after I take some if I can't get to sleep. I don't think I ever felt groggy the next day either...
I use melatonin --- NOT a sleeping pill, melatonin is a hormone that the body produces naturally. Just some people don't produce enough. I use between 3-18 mg of melatonin each night, very safe, very good sleep, never groggy the next day.
Do some extensive exercise in the evening and drink hot cocoa or milk after dinner. There is an oil - aromatherapy to help you sleep easier - I cannot remember the name. Get back to me tomorrow (email me), I let you know.

Then you can use the aromatherapy - burner - use lavender oil. You change your soap and any cream/perfume you use to lavender base product- God's will it will help you to relax and make your eyes heavy with sleep.

Don't just lay there and think about sleeping; it'll only make it worse. Put on some low lights, read a book to take your mind off what you're thinking about, drink some Chamomile tea (make sure there's no caffeine in it). Don't put the book down until you're really sleepy or you'll just go back to thinking and not relaxing.
There are some little tablets that you can get at a herb store that are like calcium tablets that desolve under your tongue..You take about 5-6 of those at night and they relax you..Another thing you could try doing is reading before bed or my son stares at one thing and he falls asleep..I dont take sleeping pills either because of the groggy the next day thing.
I also have the same problem and i listen to peaceful music and imagine i know that sounds kind of blah but it works for me and my sister so why not give it a try
I have the same problem, my fiancee is in Iraq and it is had for me to fall asleep with out him... I like to read in the bath tub, then lay in bed and play sudoko You could also do cross word puzzles. It makes me so sleepy to have my eyes concentrate on something. When my fiancee was home we would have sex and that would wear me out and I would fall asleep fast.... that is if you have a man/woman..... well happy dreams...
