Why can't I get to sleep??

Question: It's 2am rite now and i've been in bed since 9 since i wasn't feeling good. But I haven't gotten a wink of sleep. Why is this happening? Any solutions besides sleep aides. I tried different ways to fall asleep but they have failed. sourry for typos. it's latee.
Answers: Its best not to lie in bed trying to get to sleep cause if you're trying too hard it ain't gonna happen.

First of all turn the computer off! I certainly can't sleep for an hour or so after I've been on the computer.

Do something relaxing for a while - read, maybe listen to some (slow) music, maybe watch something boring on the television.

When you feel ready to go to bed, try the following relaxation exercise.

Breath slowly, listening to your heartbeat. Breath in count 10 seconds, breate out 10 seconds. Keep doing this. Then, very slowly tense the muscles in your feet, hold for 10 seconds, then relax. Then tense the muscles in your lower leg for 10 seconds, then relax. Then your thigh, then your abdomen, then your chest then your arms do the same with each muscle group until you feel totally relaxed.

When you wake up tommorow buy yourself a book on relaxation exercises, for the future!

Hope this helps,
John
You can try reading a chaper or two until you feel tired.
or listening to some music. Music helps me sleep.
It might work for you.
Stop thinking and focus on sleepie!!
Close your eyes!
Have you tried 'taking care of yourself'? (if you know what I mean)

I almost always can get to sleep after a good 'taking care of myself' session.
Are you forcing yourself to sleep? If so that's your problem. Do some exercises that will exhaust you. Occasionally the body does need some help and the solution is Vervain tea.. it's a tea to help you relax not a sleeping aid! Although for some people it knocks them out!
try some hot chocolate .. maybe some relaxing tea?
you probably thinking to much. have you tried to put a radio on an a.m channel. put it on, dont focus on anything but the distorion and that should help you out.
Turn off the computer, lay down and shut your eyes!
maybe youre super excited about something i mean christmas is comming up, but try drinking milk or eating turkey. I know it sounds silly but they have triptofan in them and it makes you sleepy.

hope you feel better
hmm... maybe your not exhausted yet, so excercise or something during the day and don't eat before going to bed, normally i have trouble going 2 bed too, but if i've had a busy day it normally easier to go to bed.
Insomnia can be a symptom of physical disorders, although for most of us it's the result of tension, stress and anxiety—and of course the more anxious we get about our insomnia, the worse it gets. If your doctor pronounces you a healthy insomniac, he might suggest some of the techniques provided here. Or she might prescribe drugs to help you get to sleep.

I suggest you try all these methods first, and use drugs only as a last resort. The decision, of course, is yours.

Take a Warm Bath
It's a great way to relax your body. Don't overdo it, however. You merely want to relax your body, not exhaust it. Too long in hot water and your body is drained of vitality.

Use bath salts, or throw in Epsom salts and baking soda—one cup of each. These will relax you and also help remove toxins from your body.

Get a Massage
Have your spouse (or whoever) give you a massage just before going to sleep. If you can convince them to give you a full body massage, great. If not, even a short backrub and/or a face and scalp massage can be a big help. Have them make the massage strokes slow, gentle, yet firm, to work the tension out of your muscles and soothe you to sleep.

Listen to Music
Play some soft, soothing music that will lull you to sleep. There are even cassettes and records designed for that very purpose. Some are specially composed music, others simply have sounds of waves rhythmically breaking, or the steady pattern of a heartbeat.

Of course if you don't have a record, cassette or CD player that will automatically turn off, we don't suggest this. If you have to get up and turn it off at the end, you've obviously lost its effect.

Drink Warm Milk
A glass of warm milk 15 minutes before going to bed will soothe your nervous system. Milk contains calcium, which works directly on jagged nerves to make them (and you) relax.

Drink Herb Tea
If you don't like milk—or are avoiding dairy products—try a cup of hot camomile, catnip, anise or fennel tea. All contain natural ingredients which will help you sleep. Most health food stores will also have special blends of herb tea designed to soothe you and help you get to sleep.

Eat a Bedtime Snack

Avoid Caffeine, Alcohol and Tobacco

Sleep in a Well-Ventilated Room

Sleep on a Good Firm Bed
Sleep on Your Back
Get Some Physical Exercise During the Day
Keep Regular Bedtime Hours
If You Can't Sleep, Get Up
Don't Sleep In
Get Up Earlier in the Morning
Keep Your Bed a Place for Sleep
Avoid Naps
Avoid Illuminated Bedroom Clocks

Of course there's the standard insomnia remedy
that everyone knows (although it never worked for me)
