Carpol Tunal (sp) question??

Question: I am a sufferer, and right now it really hurts. Would muscle relaxers help or should I stick to Advil?
Answers: the carpal tunnel is a tendon stick to advil to reduce inflamation
I havent heard of muscle relaxers for CT. I would stick to advil, but Im not a doctor.
Muscle relaxers don't really help because carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by a ligament pressing against a nerve. Plus the side effects of the relaxants can be drowsiness. The advil is the best choice. You might try other NSAIDs such as naproxen. There are also stretching exercises that can help by etending the hand upwards towads the top of the arm and gently using the other hand to stretch it. Surgery is also an option if it becomes very annoying or painful.
See a neurologist
Speaking from personal experience and because I have it, stay away from steroids! That's unadvisable due to the huge problem they place on the liver, this includes topical; they don't get to the root of the problem, they just make the symptoms worse. I do agree however that finger and wrist exercises will help; I use The Gripp- comes in 3 levels of purple, pink, and blue- ( soft. medium, firm ) I keep mine next to my keyboard and use em everyday. I included a link in the source area where you can purchase it online; your local Walmart or sports store may have them too if you're not comfortable ordering online. Good luck!
Immobilizing braces for one option. Also physiotherapy offers several ways to treat and control carpal tunnel syndrome. Manual treatment that includes deep friction massage can help manage the swelling that is a factor in nerve compression. This is combined with manual stretches to the tendons to the fingers and wrist. Another modality of treatment is ultrasonic therapy. Localized steroid injections can be quite effective for temporary relief. Avoiding activities that cause repetitive stress is an option that can help avoid the pain. And then the surgery.
The muscle relaxers wont help the carpal tunnel problem, because it is caused by inflamation. The anti-inflamatories, like advil, do help, some. Just make sure you take advil with food, or your tummy wont feel well either.

If things persist, go to the doc., and ask about steroids, like cortasone (spell ?). That is a big one-time anti-inflamatory that sometimes really works. BUT, don't take more than two courses of cortasone, because multiple uses in the same place can be damaging.
