Getting someone to eat.??
Question: My grandmother is on a heart diet. Mainly low sodium. She is a very picky eater. The problem is getting her to eat. She eats a little bit and then she says she's full. She doesn't like anything we offer her. Not too mention she won't drink anything but chocolate milk. I'm desperate for answers. Please serious answers only.
Answers: Discuss her diet with her doctor. He may have some suggestions. There are some nutritious, higher calorie drinks that she might enjoy that could help her gain a little weight. My father in law used it successfully. I think it's called Ensure. Also, try offering small snacks at frequent intervals. Sometimes older people have a weak sense of taste and she may not be enjoying food. Maybe if you join her in these smaller meals she would enjoy the company and eat a little more.
Sometimes it's alright to eat small amounts at a time. I'm a healthy weight, but don't eat a whole lot at one sitting. I just eat more regularly which is actually better for your digestive system. Check out how many calories she should be consuming everyday, then ask her what she wants to eat. Calculate if she's getting the appropriate number of calories in her small meals throughout the entire day. Chocolate milk is actually not unhealthy. It contains all the same nutrients as regular milk, but does have a higher sugar level. Ask the doctor if that is good or bad for her heart.
Sorry.
You basically have two choices.
One....You can keep trying to offer her different things and hope you find something she likes or two, you can just stop trying because she will never change.
Buy her those shakes in a can. Darn it! I can't remember the name. Like a slimfast, but not for dieting and for older people and they have kids ones now. It will give her all the vitamins she needs daily. They make shocolate, vanilla and strawberry. She is older, so she will not eat alot anyways at one time. Hope this helps.
I am very serious about this. My father had cancer he wouldn't eat and it made him weak. I had him smoke marajuana and he ate a lot.
Actually, there's not much you can do. I've done a lot of N.A. work and they just don't have an appetite. You can try to get her to drink some of those nutritional drinks in the can but sometimes their taste buds don't like them. Also, if she enjoys some kinds of foods, give them to her and don't coax her to eat things she doesn't like. What I'm trying to say is, let her have her joy. Also, maybe that 1/2 salt might help. She might need a little flavor. As long as you weigh her everyday at the same time to make sure she's not gaining water weight. That would be dangerous for her heart. Also, please know that there is no cure for congestive heart failure. I hope you will be able to deal with bad news. She should be kept comfortable. I can tell how much you love her... sorry honey
