Nutritionists: My 4 year old won't drink milk??
Question: My son drank formula until he was 2 , but he wouldnt ever touch milk. He loves greens( calcium) and will eat some yogurt, but will his not drinking milk be a problem? He drinks lots of water and loves orange juice. No milk. He even eats cereal dry. I try to slip evaporated milk into mac and cheese for him. Will that be enough? He is bright and on target as far as his learning, but my sister says he needs more essential fatty acids. How can I tell?
Answers: Don't worry if your child doesn't drink milk. My Dad was intolerant towards milk and was always a healthy person. If your are worried about calcium intake, don't, cause many foods like greens have calcium in it. Think of it, cows eat alot of grass and grains to provide milk for their calf. Actually, cows's milk was not intended for humans but for the calf. If you compare the calcium of a cow's milk with the calcium of a mother's milk, you will see that the calcium in cow's milk is higher. Why? Because a calf needs more calcium (grows faster) than a baby does. Feed your son a variety of good foods and he will be healthy.
By the way, a table spoon of sesame seeds contains way more calcium than any glass of milk will provide. You can feed him sesame seed butter on toast. Try to see if he'll take soya milk for protein intake. The cheese he takes is good for him. Don't worry, I think you are doing just fine.
You can go to the library and borrow a book on ways to naturally feed a child without milk. That should reassure you and give you good advice.
Hi
As long as your child gets enough calcium eating other foods the milk will not be a problem. If he will not drink milk concentrate on what he will eat for instance
Here is a list of calcium rich foods and the amount of mg each portion contains,
Low fat yougurt 5oz 225mg
Ice-cream 4oz 134mg
Cheddar cheese 1oz 202mg
Boiled Spinach 4oz 179mg
Baked beans 4oz 59mg
Tofu 3.5oz 480mg
Whitebait 4oz 482mg
I have suspected osteoporosis i have been advised to eat a calcium rich diet amongst other things,
The above foods were taken from a leaflet given to me by the hospital doctor today.
If you son eats a varied diet and gets plenty of vitamin D (Sunlight is best for that) he will be just fine. He has the added bonus of a mother who cares enough not to fill him with junk.
Good luck xx
I would not worry about it. There is a lot of evidence that Milk is bad for us. Think about it...milk is designed to raise a baby cow, not a baby person.
I personally never drank a lot of milk...still don't unless I'm having cookies (don't laugh). Cheese, yogurt (my kids love yogurt...hate milk..?) should provide enough.
