Dental partials from the ninth ring of hell - I have questions.??
Question: I have an autoimmune illnesse and suddenly found myself with a mouth full of cavities. Then came two partials -- one upper, one lower -- with the metal clasp things that make me think of the movie Alien every time I have to put them in. They are sharp and can do damage. My dentist wants me to leave the partials in 24/7 - but I am prone to oral thrush and don't make much saliva. I have gone back several times now because the partials don't seat quite right and the answer is always to grind off some of my teeth. Don't I want to keep all the enamel I can? I am just wondering. As it is -- I have to take the darned things out to eat because they hurt too much and I do not want to lose any more tooth to the grinder. I have some teeth I cannot even identify anymore by shape. We live in a rural area with only a couple of dentists still, if this one is off the mark I will travel if I have to. Could someone give me the benefit of their wisdom?
Answers: Autoimmune diseases reek havoc on the body and I am sorry that you are having problems. My first suggestion to you is to get on some sort of fluoride therapy, I would recommend Periomed rinse, it is distributed by Omni/3m. It will help to form a protective barrier to help guard the teeth from further decay. Another over the counter ones are Phos-Flur rinse, or ACT rinse.
OK, now on to your issues with your partials..... I would not let your dentist grind anything off your natural teeth, he/she should be able to adjust the partials by reducing the tension on the acrylic on the partial and adjust the metal clasps. If the metal is irritating, there is another type of clasp that is made of plastic, looks like gum tissue as well, so not so scary looking. It is called a Valplast partial, I would suggest to look into another dentist. The point of having a partial is to give you back quality of life, not cause more problems. If they do not fit... they you need to start over. You should be able to eat with them, you should be able to talk with them, you should be able to go about your life without them being a constant in your thoughts. So, this is where the dentist needs to step up and do the right thing and start over.
By adjusting and grinding your own teeth, this person is causing you more problems. The doctor that I work for only adjusts the irritation spots on the partial itself.
As for keeping them in 24/7...well, this is something that I don't recommend. Especially due to your lower immune suppression, your mouth needs time to rest and breathe I do understand his/her reasoning's, they want you to get use to them, but if they do not fit correctly, then no matter how much you wear them, all you'll get out of it is aggravation.
So, I don't know if I have helped you much, but hopefully gave you a few little insights to the dental world.
If you have insurance, call your ins. company to have them recommend a reputable dentist to maybe switch to.
Good luck with all that is going on.
I wish you comfort and ease.
I am sorry you have an autoimmune disease. I, too, have an autoimmune disease. I also have a partial with the metal clasps. (I refer to mine as claws .) I have a lower partial because my two bottom teeth were pulled, and I also had a wide gap. The partial is four teeth and they look very natural. I don't think your dentist should keep grinding your teeth down. I hope you can find a new dentist and they should be able to help you. My dentist had to adjust the claws on my partial several times, but now it is perfect. Sometimes I eat with them in, and sometimes I take them out to eat. I soak them overnight. My dentist said that my mouth needs to 'rest', and they should not be worn 24/7. I really hope you can find a dentist that will help you. Good luck to you and God bless.
It sounds like you really have a mess. I don't like the answers or lack of them that you are getting from your dentist. I think a trip an hour or so away might be in order. Try calling ahead to a denture guy...get the # from the phone book.. Tell him what yo are experiencing...HE will knowhow to advise you!! ow! ♥
