The first thing I can tell you is don't panic! Root canal is not the worst thing to happen to you!
It sounds as though you are not having a dental emergency and that the procedure, if it is needed, is being done before you are experiencing too much pain. That is a good thing.
Most people equate root canal with tooth pain. It is the other way around. You have an infected tooth that hurts like the dickens and to treat it you need to have a root canal done. It is not the root canal that hurts but the infected tooth. So if you are not at the infected stage, just have a very big decay... you are in luck.
The treatment is usually done in two visits.
The first treatment the dentist will remove all the decay and expose the pulp chamber of the tooth. This is where you have the nerves and the blood supply to the tooth. Using very fine files the dentist will remove the pulp and the nerves and smooth the inside of the canals. Using a medicated wash the inside of the tooth the tooth is sterilized and then medication is placed in the tooth and the tooth is sealed with a doughy material. You might be give prescriptions for antibiotics and pain meds if needed.
The second visit is pretty much like the first... file, rinse and then the tooth is sealed with a rubbery material. At that point the dentist will know what final restoration you will need for the tooth.
If too much tooth structure is missing you might need to have a crown made for the tooth. Otherwise you will get a filling or an inlay/onlay (gold or porcelain).
No matter what... you are taking care of yourself and that is good.
You should do a google search and read up on a bunch of websites. It's too involved for one person to give a full description here at Yahoo Answers. Use the link below.
