What happened to me at the dentist??
Question: A few months ago I was getting gum grafting done, and when the doctor injected the stuff to get your mouth numb (not sure what it's called) I felt sick to my stomach, then a few minutes later my heart was racing, but then I was okay.
I was told that it was a reaction to the epinephrine, how can I prevent this for my next visit for tooth extractions? For my teeth extractions, I am getting 2 teeth pulled for braces, but I don't want to get queasy like I did last time.
Answers: usually giving a block, the LA would have got injected directly into the blood vessel, usually they aspirate & check if the needle is in the blood vessel which your dentist must have not done.Epinephrine is a natural harmon in the body, it will not creat any allergic reaction.
Eat something small before the appointment.
Epi is a substance that is used to reverse allergic reactions.
You might of been allergic to the Novocaine they gave you.
If you feel sick again, breath in with your mouth and out with your nose.
next time tell the doctor you dont want anesthetic with epinephrin tell them you had a bad reaction. tell them to use carbocaine, they use it for people with high blood pressure
Most local anaesthetics have epinephrine in them to restrict the blood vessels to make the anaesthetic last longer and to minimize the bleed which occurs.
If the material gets into the blood stream, it will make your heart race and you will feel queasy. This can happen even with the most carefully administered anaesthetic.
It has nothing to do with having anything to eat beforehand.
On your next visit to the dentist, let him/her know that you had this reaction and let him/her know that you want anaesthetic without adrenalin/epinephrine. That should be readily at hand since the dentist would use the epinephrine-free anaesthetic on people with heart problems.
The shorter duration of anaesthetic should not be a problem, I assume that your are getting your premolars removed and they generally come out quite easily. Best of luck with that.
As similar reaction occurs with people who are subject to panic attacks and I learned that I could bring on a panic attack by using anaesthetic with epinephrine. Upon realizing what was happening I did not use it on those patients. Many dentists are not aware of this reaction potential.
I hope that helps.
It may not happen the next time, since you are aware or it.
Xylocaine (the numbing medicine) also causes blood vessels to dilate. When it is used anywhere on the head for sutures or dental work, epinephrine is added to constrict the vessels. There are a lot of blood vessel in this area. There is less bleeding and it prolongs the anesthetic effect longer.
I need a lot of suturing when I was a Navy Hospital Corpsman.
