Does anesthesia always make you throw up??

Question: I am going to have a few teeth pulled soon, and they will need to give me anesthesia. Whenever my sister got her teeth pulled she threw up as soon as she woke up from surgery. I am really nervous and I wanted to know how common it is for a patient to throw up after getting anesthesia.
Answers: GA can cause vomiting not LA.
There are a number of risk factors involved. People do not always throw up. The highest risk factors would be young female patient, nonsmoker, history of nausea with previous operations, and use of opiods (morphine, fentanyl) during surgery. There are a number of drugs that you can receive before the operation that greatly decrease the risk of post op nausea and vomiting, like Zofran, or Decadron.
I've had general anesthesia several times and never threw up, although I was nauseous once afterwards for about an hour. If you're scared to get anesthesia, you don't have to get it to get your teeth pulled. They can give you a shot to the gums that will completely numb all pain, so there's really no reason to be put to sleep. I just had my wisdom teeth extracted yesterday and I chose not to get anesthesia and instead to just get the numbing shot. I don't know how common it is for a patient to throw up after anesthesia - I haven't heard of anyone throwing up from it until now.
not common at all. when the doc tells you not to eat or drink after midnight, there's a reason.
some times it will upset your stomach, but not always. Please make sure that when you have this done that your dentist does NOT use the drug Versed on you!!! This is a terrible drug that should have been yanked off the market years ago. Alot of dentists use it to cause amnesia so their patient's won't remember what happened to them. It does NOTHING for pain, and can have some terrible side effects.
I had it in 1991 and I've never been the same since. Suffering from severe depression and chronic anxiety attacks. Feel free to check out the website www.versedbusters.com or www.askapatient.com. If you'd like to hear some horror stories about this drug.
Not always. It depends on the drugs you get, and your particular reaction to them.

If you swallow any blood during the procedure, that will make you nauseated.

Versed (midazolam) is a GREAT drug that many people love. It prevents people from being paralyzed and awake under anesthesia, although you won't be paralyzed for dental work. Serialmom12 might have had issues with the drug, but millions of people say otherwise!

The important thing to ask is who will be giving you your anesthesia. If it's not a nurse anesthetist or anesthesiologist, be very, very careful. My own boneheaded son had anesthesia given to him by the dentist who pulled his teeth. He was OK, but that contradicts safety guidelines that state you should have someone watching you who is NOT doing the procedure. I'm glad he was lucky.

There are drugs you can get to help prevent nausea and vomiting. Any qualified anesthesia provider can give those to you prior to administering the anesthetic.

Good luck.
no i do not throw up at all
Anesthesia makes me deathly nauseated. You need to ask ahead of time for them to give you something to prevent the nausea.

However, I went to the oral surgeon with the understanding that the only way I would let him cut out my wisdom tooth was to put me to sleep. After I got there he was going to but talked to me and assured me I would not have any pain while he was working on my tooth. He explained both procedures and after discussing it with him, I was glad I did not let him put me to sleep. He used a lot of Novocaine and I did not feel anything. I was not drowsy or nauseated afterward (which are a couple of side effects ) I did not even have the laughing gas. That can sometimes cause nausea.

If I were you, I would avoid being given anesthesia is you do not have too. They can numb you and you will not feel anything and will recuperate much faster.

Best wishes...
I've had surgery on my ankle and was completely out for it. I woke up feeling fine. No nausea at all. I think it's all about how tolerant you are of drugs. I can take almost all pills and be fine. Nothing really gets to me. Some people just don't react well to medicine.

Can't you get the nitrous oxide for it? The goofy gas? I like that stuff. You're out of it and kinda know what's going on but don't care. Why don't they numb it and give you the gas?
It is not common at all. I worked in an office for years and it rarely happened. Don't worry. The dentist recommends not to eat before going to the dentist, since the night before.
If you are referring to IV sedation anethesia, yes. This is common for people who do not commonly take drugs to get sick after waking up. If you are referring to local anesthesia injections, no this is not common.
My father had his Appendix removed last year, and they had remove one of the largest ammounts of pus within his stomach while their. To the nurse's suprise, he didn't vomit. Everyone's different. You may, or may not throw up depending on your reaction. I wouldn't be nervous though, Dentists have this all the time.
