Should I tell my dermatologist about my symptoms? [accutane]??
Question: I'm taking accutane, and a bloody nose is not a severe symptom, but whenever I go for my monthly dermo appointment they always ask about that stuff [joint pain, bloody nose, decrease night vision, itching etc]...
Now, I've never had bloody noses usually, probably about once when I was four, but now I frequently have bloody snot [it doesn't bother me at all, I'm just not sure if they'll take me off the the accutane if I tell them I have about it].
I might also have joint pain, but I haven't been able to tell because I've lately been sore because of our rigorous work-outs...
The bloody snot is not a big deal to me at all, but
****KEY QUESTION: Will they take me off Accutane if I tell them?
Answers: Bloody snot is not a bloody nose, and the fact that they ask about it indicates that they know this is a side effect. I think that you should discuss it with them, because many medications are a balance between the good they do and the side effects. It sounds to me like this is a bearable one, and they are unlikely to yank you off the medication because of it especially if the medication contributes to your self-esteem, which is a very important factor that almost certainly overrides bloody snot as a side effect as long as you aren't having uncontrolled bleeding. Have some faith in your doctor and discuss this, including your fears of being taken off the medication (he should be informed how you feel about this, too, if it's working and only has this rather minor side effect).
Accutane is a very serious drug. Call you doctor. Why take a chance with your health?
